Strange Keyboard Problems

Wed 2016-01-06

Since about a month ago I noticed a strange behaviour of my usb keyboard: Replugging it or resuming my laptop after suspend unpredictably switched the layout to German about half of the times.

Not remembering to recently have changed anything about the configuration I was quite puzzled. Digging through the locale settings in my home directory did not turn up anything useful.

In a desperate attempt, I decided to grep for the string "de" in all files in /etc/ recursively (of course using Emacs with M-x find-grep [RET] find /etc -type f -exec grep -nH -e "\<de\>" {} + [RET]).

Guess what turned up?

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-usb-keyboard.conf
# 2014-04-06 LS
# Every time usb keyboard is plugged in, the layout should be set to de
Section "InputClass"
       Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
        MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
        MatchProduct "keyboard"
        Option "XkbLayout" "de"

Seems this was intentional by my former self 18 months ago (but non-functional most of the time? -- else I would have remembered it).
