HHU Mediathek Download

Download lecture videos from the HHU-Mediathek.

By now, many lectures at Heinrich-Heine-University Duesseldorf are recorded and published at mediathek.hhu.de afterwards.

The layout of the mediathek looks a lot like youtube, and similar to youtube, adobe's flash player is required to view the videos inside the browser.

This way, users who can't or don't want to use it, can not see the videos.

Due to this, I wrote a small script in python, that, given a mediathek-url, extracts the video and saves it to disk. You can specify which format and which quality of the video to save.

Alternatively, the video can directly be streamed to an external application.

The program is free and open-source software and can be found at GitHub (also note the new item in »LINKS« to the right).

Testers and feedback appreciated!

Developed with Arch Linux, streaming tested with mplayer.

Update 2015-02-17 The HHU Mediathek maintainers noted, that the Adobe Flash plugin is not necessary for the Mediathek's player to work. It uses the HTML5 video tag as a fallback.

Nontheless some browsers (e.g. luakit) do not implement (all) aspects of HTML5, so my script might be still of use.
